Ignoring its own reporting, LA Times didn't note McCain's shifting time frame for balancing budget

The Los Angeles Times reported that Sen. John McCain "advocated for his tax cuts and his plan to balance the budget by 'the end of my term in office.' " But the Times did not note, as it has previously reported, that McCain has repeatedly shifted on his time frame for balancing the budget, originally claiming he would balance the budget in four years, then pledging to do so in eight years, before reversing himself again to return to the four-year pledge.

McClatchy's Thomma misrepresented Obama's tax plan

On MSNBC Live, McClatchy's Steven Thomma asserted that Sen. John McCain will likely attack Sen. Barack Obama "as a tax-raiser, someone who'll take money out of your pocket at the very moment you don't want it to happen." Neither Thomma nor Politico's David Mark, who agreed with Thomma's assessment, noted that claims that Obama will raise taxes and "take money out of your pocket" misrepresent Obama's tax plan.

Brewer falsely portrayed McCain as denouncing voter disenfranchisement in clip she aired

On MSNBC Live, after citing a New York Times article reporting that voters are being removed from rolls or being blocked from registering, Contessa Brewer asserted that at a campaign stop, Sen. John McCain "was talking about the importance of making sure that voters who register get a chance to go vote." But in the clip she aired, McCain was not talking about alleged voter disenfranchisement or allegations that people were being illegally barred from voting; rather, he was criticizing alleged efforts to register people who are not eligible to vote.

NY Times, AP repeat McCain falsehood that Obama said Ayers was "just" a guy in his neighborhood

The New York Times and the AP uncritically reported Sen. John McCain's false claim that Sen. Barack Obama said that William Ayers was "just" a guy in his neighborhood. In fact, when questioned about Ayers in an April Democratic primary debate, Obama did not use the word "just" when describing Ayers as "a guy who lives in my neighborhood."
O'Reilly falsely claimed Obama did not vote to condemn attacks on Petraeus and Kerry

On his radio show, Bill O'Reilly falsely stated that Sen. Barack Obama did not cast a vote on a Senate amendment denouncing both an ad by MoveOn.org that targeted Gen. David Petraeus and "Swift Boat" attacks on Sen. John Kerry (D-MA). In fact, Obama voted in favor of an amendment sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) that denounced the MoveOn.org ad and character attacks on Kerry, former Sen. Max Cleland (D-GA), and other veterans.

MSNBC.com's First Read again falsely claimed McCain "did not vote" against troop funding

MSNBC.com's First Read again falsely claimed that Sen. John McCain "opposed, but did not vote," on a 2007 troop-funding appropriations bill. In fact, while McCain did not vote on a later version of the appropriations bill, he voted against the measure on March 29, 2007, and said at the time that he was opposing it, in part, because it "would establish a timeline" for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.
Media repeat Cindy McCain's attack on Obama troop-funding vote, ignore John McCain's troop-funding vote

The CBS Evening News, Fox News' The Live Desk, and the Politico's Jonathan Martin noted Cindy McCain's attack on Sen. Barack Obama that his "vote to not fund my son when he was serving sent a cold chill through my body." However, none of their reports pointed out that Sen. John McCain himself voted against legislation to fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder reported that Judy Black, whom he identified as "a policy director (read: lead lobbyist) for Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck's DC arm" and "the wife of McCain strategist Charlie Black," forwarded a PowerPoint presentation on the "campaign contributions that Fannie and Freddie provided to leading Democratic members of Congress." But Ambinder did not point out that Charlie Black has lobbied for Freddie Mac.

LA Times debate analysis rehashes gendered notion of Dems as "Mommy Party"

The Los Angeles Times' Doyle McManus recycled a standard gender cliché by asserting that Sen. Barack Obama "seemed to prove" conservative economist Jude Wanniski's theory that Republicans are the "Daddy Party" and Democrats are the "Mommy Party." McManus also uncritically reported Sen. John McCain's false claim that Obama "would raise taxes" as president.

On CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight, correspondent Louise Schiavone aired a video clip of Chicago Tribune columnist Steve Chapman criticizing Sen. Barack Obama for his association with Bill Ayers, but neither Schiavone nor Lou Dobbs noted that Chapman has also repeatedly criticized Sen. John McCain for his association with G. Gordon Liddy, whom Chapman has called McCain's "own Bill Ayers."

Chicago Tribune uncritically reported false McCain claim that Obama "will fine" small business owners who don't insure employees

The Chicago Tribune uncritically reported Sen. John McCain's false assertion during the second presidential debate that Sen. Barack Obama "will fine" small business owners who don't insure employees. In fact, Obama's health care plan states that small businesses are "exempt" from its requirement that "[l]arge employers" either "offer meaningful coverage or make a meaningful contribution to the cost of quality health coverage for their employees" or "contribute a percentage of payroll toward the costs of the national plan."

Vieira suggested Obama ad calling McCain "erratic" is attack on McCain's age, but her colleagues have made similar comments

Today's Meredith Vieira twice suggested that an Obama campaign ad describing Sen. John McCain as "erratic in crisis" is a reference to McCain's age. She did not note that the "erratic" characterization, in fact, comes from a USA Today editorial cited in the ad, which referred to McCain's response to the economic crisis on Wall Street as "erratic." Further, at least two of Vieira's colleagues at MSNBC, Joe Scarborough and Chris Matthews, also said McCain's actions could be perceived as erratic.

MSNBC's Hall said McCain was "cleared by a Senate committee" in Keating Five scandal, but not that the committee said he exercised "poor judgment"

MSNBC's Tamron Hall asserted that Sen. John McCain "was accused of corruption, although he was later cleared by a Senate committee" in the Keating Five scandal. But Hall did not note that the Senate ethics committee concluded that McCain's conduct "reflected poor judgment."

An NPR news brief and a Reuters article noted Gov. Sarah Palin's recent comment that Sen. Barack Obama has been "palling around with terrorists," a reference to his acquaintance with Bill Ayers. But neither noted that The New York Times, in the article Palin cited for her claim, reported that "the two men do not appear to have been close."
