Jansing, Halperin uncritically report Palin's false charge that Obama's "punished with a baby" comment was about abortion

On MSNBC Live, Chris Jansing uncritically aired Gov. Sarah Palin's false claim that Sen. Barack Obama was talking about abortion when he said of his two daughters: "I don't want them punished with a baby." However, Jansing did not note that Obama was discussing sex education, not abortion, when he made his comment. Time's Mark Halperin also uncritically reported Palin's attack without pointing out it was false.

Halperin: Media attention to "lipstick on a pig" comment "playing into the McCain campaign's crocodile tears"

On CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, Time's Mark Halperin characterized the recent media attention to Sen. Barack Obama's comment that "[y]ou can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig" as "a low point in the day ... and one of the low days of our collective coverage of this campaign." Halperin went on to say, "I think this is the press just absolutely playing into the McCain campaign's crocodile tears."

Media repeat Limbaugh's baseless charge that claimed Obama got "sweetheart deals" from Rezko without noting rebuttal

Politico's Ben Smith and Time's Mark Halperin uncritically reported Rush Limbaugh's baseless assertion that Sen. Barack Obama "got all kinds of sweetheart deals with [convicted Chicago businessman Antoin] Rezko" and that "[Sen. John McCain] and his wife did not get a sweetheart deal from a fraud embezzler like Tony Rezko to buy their houses." Smith and Halperin did not note that the sellers of the house Obama bought reportedly said they did not cut their asking price because Rezko bought the adjacent lot, even though they had each previously reported it.

Time's Halperin uncritically reported false claim by "[c]ritics" that Obama "encourag[ed] Americans to learn Spanish over immigrants learning English"

On his website, The Page, Mark Halperin uncritically reported the false accusation, which he attributed to "[c]ritics" of Sen. Barack Obama, that Obama "encourag[ed] Americans to learn Spanish over immigrants learning English." In fact, Obama said: "I agree that immigrants should learn English. ... But instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English -- they'll learn English -- you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about how can your child become bilingual. We should have every child speaking more than one language."

Time's Halperin printed Boehner's accusation against Obama without providing context showing it was false

Time's Mark Halperin reported on his blog that House Minority Leader John Boehner "use[d]" Sen. Barack Obama's interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg to "accuse Obama of calling Israel a 'constant sore.' " Halperin reported that the Obama campaign called Boehner's comments "a dishonest and ridiculous distortion" but did not note that the Obama campaign was right or provide the context for Obama's comment.

Discussing on ABC's This Week former President Jimmy Carter's planned meeting with a Hamas leader and the "two schools of thought about how America should deal in the world," Time magazine senior political analyst Mark Halperin -- citing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich -- said of Sen. Barack Obama: "Obama's position: Talk to your enemies." But Halperin did not mention that Obama has repeatedly said his willingness to meet with international adversaries "does not include Hamas."
To back up claims of a "liberal media," ABC's Halperin said liberal 527s "spent millions" attacking Bush, but falsely suggested there were no similar groups on the right

ABC News political director Mark Halperin falsely suggested that while progressive 527 organizations with ties to the Democratic Party attacked President Bush during the 2004 election, there were no comparable groups on the right. But one of the most prominent 527 groups in the 2004 election cycle was the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth, a group with ties to both the GOP and the Bush-Cheney '04 campaign whose attacks on Democratic candidate John Kerry -- which included numerous false and discredited allegations -- received broad coverage in the media.
