Fox's Shepard Smith affirmed Palin's misleading claim that Obama "voted 94 times for higher taxes"

After airing video of Gov. Sarah Palin's misleading assertion that Sen. Barack Obama "voted 94 times for higher taxes," Fox News' Shepard Smith affirmed Palin's claim, saying, "Well, they'll [Democrats] argue with that, but I guess down to its core, that's true." However, Smith offered no support for his purported confirmation of Palin's assertion, and FactCheck.org has described the claim as "inflated" and "padded."

AP uncritically reported Palin's mischaracterization of Obama's tax plans

The AP uncritically reported that Gov. Sarah Palin "warned voters about Democratic plans to raise taxes 'on America's hard-working families and our small businesses and a lot of folks just like Joe the Plumber and Ed the Dairyman out there.' " But the AP did not point out Obama has proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income taxpayers and raising taxes on only individuals earning more than $200,000 per year and families earning more than $250,000 per year.

NY Times, AP again ignored their own reporting on McCain campaign's claims about Obama's association with Ayers

The New York Times and the AP uncritically reported the McCain campaign's claims about Sen. Barack Obama's association with William Ayers, with a post on the Times' The Caucus blog quoting Sen. John McCain's claim that Obama "was friends with a terrorist and his wife," and the AP reporting that Gov. Sarah Palin "reaffirmed her view that Obama had been 'palling around with terrorists' because of his association with Bill Ayers." Neither news outlet noted its earlier reporting undermining these claims.

Scarborough misquoted Obama regarding Lewis remarks, then called the statement Obama didn't make "shocking" and "staggering"

On Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough falsely asserted that Sen. Barack Obama said during the October 15 presidential debate that Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) "drew appropriate comparisons" in a statement invoking George Wallace and a church bombing in criticizing "the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign." In fact, Obama said that Lewis "inappropriately drew a comparison between what was happening [at McCain-Palin rallies] and what had happened during the civil rights movement, and we immediately put out a statement saying that we don't think that comparison is appropriate" [emphasis added].

The New York Times and the AP uncritically repeated Gov. Sarah Palin's claim that Sen.
Despite most polls finding Biden won VP debate, Brzezinski asserted, "I think people overwhelmingly thought [Palin] won"

On MSNBC's Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski asserted that "people overwhelmingly thought [Gov. Sarah Palin] won her debate," while Willie Geist suggested that Palin won by a smaller margin than Brzezinski claimed. However, most polls conducted on the days following the vice presidential debate found that Sen. Joe Biden won. In fact, a Media Matters review of polling sites did not find any national polls that found Palin won the debate.

The New York Times uncritically quoted Gov. Sarah Palin saying of Sen. Barack Obama: "Our opponent voted to cut off funding for our troops. ... And he said, too, that our troops in Afghanistan are just, quote, 'air-raiding villages and killing civilians.' " The article did not note that Sen. John McCain himself voted against a bill to fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and that Defense Secretary Robert Gates recently apologized for civilian deaths resulting from coalition air strikes in Afghanistan.

The New York Times' John Harwood wrote that Gov. Sarah Palin "assert[ed] that" Sen. Barack Obama's "relationship with Bill Ayers, the onetime Weather Underground figure, constitutes 'palling around with terrorists.' " But Harwood did not mention that two days earlier, in an article that Palin herself referenced, the Times itself reported that "the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers."
